Study with QuantIC

If you are a physicist with an interest in technology, an engineer with an entrepreneurial flare, or a theorist with an interest in applied problems, join the UK Quantum Technology Hub for Quantum Enhanced Imaging (QuantIC) and help us shape the future of imaging technology.

PhD Opportunities in Quantum Imaging

We are pleased to offer 5 PhD opportunities in partnership with industry on Quantum Imaging as part of our dynamic and supportive QuantIC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP).

To apply, please email info@quantic.ac.uk with a C.V and cover letter before 29th September 2023. Our dedicated QuantIC support team are available to answer your queries at any stage.

QuantIC is part of the flagship UK National Quantum Technology Programme, a multi-billion-pound investment into the development of next generation technologies on quantum enabled systems. Working alongside several universities and industry partners, our aim is to produce highly valued candidates with the skills and knowledge to navigate the quantum landscape of tomorrow.

Candidates will be trained with the technical knowledge and transferrable skills needed for their future careers. The programme will provide an opportunity to engage with companies and academics at the forefront of Quantum Technology activities within the UK and worldwide.

Available PhDs may be based at:

  • University of Glasgow
  • University of Bristol
  • Imperial College London
  • University of Edinburgh
  • Heriot-Watt University
  • Exeter University
  • University of Southampton
  • University of Strathclyde

Candidates will be joining a cohort of new and existing researchers, working together on quantum technologies. As part of the UK National Quantum Technology Programme, researchers are invited to events and activities at both national and international levels. QuantIC will, where possible, provide support with travelto assist with the  dissemination of your research and knowledge-based networking.

QuantIC’s research spans numerous areas, such as the development of technologies for the detection and timing of light. Examples include:

  • Quantum illumination, to beat classical resolution limits or image at alternative wavelengths
  • Imaging systems for autonomous vehicles, and underwater navigation
  • New medical imaging techniques for brain scanning, life sciences and diagnosis
  • Detection of greenhouse gases for monitoring of leaks
  • Next generation superconducting single-photon detectors for use in fundamental physics

QuantIC will provide the facilities so that you will develop an understanding of quantum photonics, the design and engineering quantum imaging systems, experimental apparatus and information processing through to co-working with our end users to demonstrate quantum advantage over the incumbent classical technology.

In all these areas you will work within a team on stimulating projects in world leading research groups and labs, developing exciting new technology. You will receive a tax-free stipend of £18,622 per year (rising in line with UKRI rates) with your PhD tuition fees paid.

We’re looking for 5 new PhD students (with a 1st or 2:1 degree qualification). There are no prerequisites required in terms of laboratory or coding experience, but enthusiasm is essential, as well as a willingness to learn skills in many different areas of science and engineering.

To apply, please email info@quantic.ac.uk with a C.V and cover letter before 29th September 2023.
