Retrofitting existing homes is central to Scotland’s journey to net zero. In 2024, the Scottish Government invited experts to help shape a new approach to assessing energy upgrades - one that promotes smarter retrofits, builds public trust, and accelerates the shift to cleaner heating.

This event, co-hosted by the Centre for Sustainable Energy and the Centre for Public Policy Early Career Researchers’ Network, will explore the intersection of housing, energy, and inequality in Scotland. Through research insights and real-world case studies, we’ll examine best practices in retrofitting and the risks current approaches pose to low-income communities.

We’ll delve into how housing policy can both support and undermine equitable energy transitions, and discuss how existing frameworks can be used - or misused - in practice.

What to expect:

  • Expert Presentations: Kick off the morning with talks from leading researchers on housing, energy, and social justice.
  • Panel Discussion: A timely conversation on the proposed Housing (Scotland) Bill, chaired by Professor Ken Gibb, expert in housing economics and devolved policy. He’ll be joined by practitioners and activists working at the forefront of housing and inequality.
The event will be an opportunity to hear from voices across academia, engineering, and the third sector, and to contribute to an important conversation about how Scotland can build a fairer, greener future - starting at home.

Please note that this is an in-person only event, all are welcome, but please ensure you book a space!
