America today is facing a long-running crisis of fact. AI technologies like ChatGPT have problems with “hallucinations” – the unwanted production of errors – but AI is not the first technology to amplify public disagreements, misunderstandings and manipulations of historical fact for political gain. Modern AI hallucinations are only one portion of a long-running crisis of fact and technology in modern culture. In this talk, Professor Guldi will describe several concrete strategies that information scientists and social scientists can take to protect democracy today.
